South Africa

"My overall experience was far more rewarding than I ever anticipated. I met people that I hope will be my friends for life. I learned about the history of the country and the views of the South Africans who are dedicated to making their country a better place."

Why Volunteer in South Africa?

As a volunteer in South Africa, you will have the unique opportunity to experience the culture of one of the most diverse nations in the world from the inside out. South African WomanAfter nearly 50 years of apartheid, today's South Africans embrace people of European, Asian, African, and indigenous descent—including the Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Pedi, Swazi, and the Khoi San.

In spring 2007, CCS began operations in South Africa in the metropolitan city of Cape Town. With a population of 3.5 million people, the city's diversity, strong sense of culture, and commitment to social change make it an exciting place to volunteer. TableTop Mountain in South AfricaIts rich and complex history is often overshadowed by its reputation as one of the world's most beautiful cities, with majestic mountains, beautiful valleys, wide sandy beaches, and breathtaking scenery.

In spring 2009, CCS is opening doors in the scenic countryside town of Robertson, about 90 minutes from Cape Town. At the heart of Route 62, this small farming town is a common day stop for tourists enjoying the longest wine route in South Africa. Volunteers here will have the unique opportunity to experience daily life in Robertson and learn about its history and social challenges.

While volunteering with CCS in South Africa, you'll learn about the legacy of apartheid and how it shapes the current social landscape. You'll see the changes, celebrations, and challenges that have emerged within its young democracy of 15 years, and the socio-economic impacts of poverty, unemployment, and HIV/AIDS will be highlighted. You'll experience and enjoy a safe and structured program designed to help you truly immerse yourself in the local culture. You'll work side-by-side with local people, contributing directly to community-based projects, many of which are located in townships. These dynamic grassroots organizations help to provide education, employment, social assistance, and health care—including HIV/AIDS outreach and education.
